San Gimignano

The hill has been inhabited since the Etruscan age. During the Middle Age it became an important commercial centre on the "Francigena" road. The most important buildings of the city, the tower-houses (15 still survive of the ancient 72) and the city walls still embracing the old village were build during the XII and XIII centuries. San Gimignano has completely preserved its ancient aspect and its medieval city plan, for which it is famous all over the world. We suggest beginning the visit by crossing Porta San Giovanni. From this gate you can go to the charming Piazza della Cisterna, surrounded by XIII and XIV centuries buildings, and to Piazza del Duomo, where you find the Podestà Palace, the Palazzo del Popolo and the Collegiata. Going on San Matteo street, you cross the medieval heart of the city until the Church of Sant'Agostino. The city is dominated by the Fortress, built in 1353, nowadays surrounded by a large public garden. From here you can enjoy an enchanting view of the city and of the Tuscany countryside. The country is planted with vineyards producing the "Vernaccia", a white wine known ever since the XIV century. It is possible to buy a ticket allowing to visit all the museums of the city as well as the Torre Grossa (the Big Tower) of the Palazzo del Popolo. In the surrounding countryside we recommend a visit to the Pieve di Cellole.
